Know More About Distribution Transformers

A distribution transformer is also known as a service transformer. These are step down transformers which are used for distributing the electric supply over a variety of power supply distribution systems. They basically step down the final voltage upto around 240V and make it usable for domestic and household purposes.

These distribution power lines can be transmitted on the ground level or over the poles. Accordingly, the transformers on the ground level are known as pad mount transformers. They can be on the ground level or can be even present underground. They are built on concrete pads and locked in steel cases which give them their name pad-mount transformers. Similarly, when the distribution power lines are mounted on utility poles, then these are called pole mount transformers.

Types of Transformers

The classification of types of transformers can be done on the basis of various categories like their location, phases, insulation type, etc.

  • The major categorization is done on the basis of phases and location. Depending upon the number of phases available, they can be single phase, or three phase.

  • As discussed earlier also, depending upon the location where a transformer is mounted, there can be pole mount or pad mount transformers and underground transformers as well.

  • Another classification is possible because of the type of insulation provided in a transformer. There are dry type transformers as well as liquid immersed transformers.

Applications of a Distribution Transformer

There are multiple uses of these transformers. But, as they are step down transformers, they have more utility in purposes which need low voltage supply such as domestic applications. They are widely used in urban as well as rural areas for providing power supply at houses, etc. They also have applications at windmill farms where the turbine is stepped up using these transformers to provide supply to the substations which are far away from each other.
